***UPDATE, 10/14/2016: This article was written prior to the recent tapes of Mr. Trump speaking crude and objectifying words against women. As a result of these revelations, I have decided I will not be as vocal in my defense of Donald Trump as I was previously. Such words can never be condoned, no matter how liberal and one-sided the media reporting has become. Nonetheless, I feel it also necessary to clarify that I will still be voting for Mr. Trump come November. A Trump presidency is clearly preferable to a Clinton presidency, whose platform stands is direct conflict with the Catholic Church. Not only is Mrs. Clinton and her cabinet anti-Catholic on principle, they are anti-Catholic in their hearts (confirmed by the recent email leaks), which proposes an even greater threat to the Church in America.***
In yet another stunning move, Donald Trump announced today that he is setting up a pro-life coalition staffed by pro-life leaders throughout our country and headed up by Susan B. Anthony’s own Marjorie Dannenfelser. This announcement also came with a written statement, which not only calls on pro-life leaders but also lays down specific goals, which includes;
- Nominating pro-life justices to the U.S. Supreme Court.
- Signing into law the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which would end painful late-term abortions nationwide.
- Defunding Planned Parenthood as long as they continue to perform abortions, and reallocating their funding to community health centers that provide comprehensive health care for women.
- Making the Hyde Amendment permanent law to protect taxpayers from having to pay for abortions
This is very good news for Catholics, and I only hope that EWTN will give this story the airtime that it deserves. As Mrs. Dannenfelser herself said, “For a candidate to make additional commitments during a general election is almost unheard of,” she told the Washington Times. “The contrast could not be clearer between the two tickets, and I am proud to serve as National Chairwoman for Donald Trump’s Pro-Life Coalition.”
Kudos to Mrs. Dannenfelser for speaking up for Catholic principles. As our Catholic leaders continue to lump both Trump and Clinton into the same basket of undesirables, and paint a gloomy picture for the 2016 presidency, news like this is yet further confirmation of how out-of-touch they are with basic Catholic teaching on the sanctity of human life. Let us remember to pray for our priests and bishops, who are operating from the deficient seminary formation of the late 20th century.
